Searching for Wonder

  1. Find a grade-appropriate image that would help a student connect and wonder.
  2. Come up with at least one idea for using the image for learning.
  3. What AASL standards are addressed?

This is the title page of a diary written by a Mormon 23-year old man who travelled from Utah to Nebraska to lead additional Mormon pioneers to Utah.

We would like to know who is surrendering and why (the white flag); what the question mark (river) represents; who is the artist and does he always paint himself into his paintings?

What are the costs to the environment when countries expand?
What are the ethical considerations when countries expand?
What do you take into consideration when you attempt to prioritize or balance rights of larger society and smaller parts of that community (smaller groups of people, environment, etc.) OR present day needs vs. future needs?

What happened to all the Native Americans?
Why the symbolism of te question mark?
Why the upside down hebrew that reads The Amighty?
What's happening in the world/US when this painting was made?
Where are we?
Who's farming? Native Americans? Settlers?
Why isn't there any wildlife?

Who discovered that the upside down clear cut was a hebrew word for "almighty?"
Is the red and white cloth on the pole a flag or a parasol? Does it signify surrender?
Is that a person below it?
